Our History
Cuyahoga Valley Choral Arts began in 1986 as a small ensemble within the Cuyahoga Falls Parks and Recreation Department. Originally known as the Cuyahoga Falls Community Chorus, the group was founded on a simple, powerful mission: bringing the joy of song to nursing homes and public spaces.
A Legacy of Leadership
In nearly 40 years, Cuyahoga Valley Choral Arts has been defined by remarkable stability, guided by only four directors. Edward Arthur “Ted” Shure has led the ensemble for 22 seasons, joined by Associate Conductor Colleen Coyle Miller, who has been instrumental in the organization’s operational and artistic growth since 2016.
Growth & Community Impact
What started as a small group of seniors has evolved into a vibrant nonprofit hub for choral music. In 2023, Cuyahoga Valley Choral Arts officially became a 501(c)(3) organization, establishing a permanent home at St. Luke’s Lutheran Church. Today, we are proud to include:
- The Cuyahoga Valley Community Chorus: A non-auditioned ensemble of 50 singers from all walks of life, united by the belief that music should be accessible to everyone.
- The Cuyahoga Valley Children’s Choir: A fully-funded program serving underrepresented youth in Akron’s North Hill community.
Bringing People Together
Our tagline is our promise: “Bringing people together through music.” Whether performing for 30,000 annual audience members or collaborating with local arts organizations, Cuyahoga Valley Choral Arts remains dedicated to serving our community—one note at a time.
